Academic

Since completing my PhD at Goldsmiths in 2009, I have held academic positions at Oxford University, University of Warwick, and Goldsmiths. My research lies in economic sociology, political economy and social theory, drawing on the work of Luc Boltanski and Michel Foucault, to consider how economisation and quantification have remade power, authority and the self in neoliberal societies.

My work has been published in a range of leading peer-reviewed journals including Economy & Society, Theory Culture & Society, Finance & Society and Journal of Cultural Economy. With Nicholas Gane, I have co-edited a special issue of Theory Culture & Society on ‘Postneoliberalism‘ and convened a collection of reflective essays on the ‘state of the state‘, published in Economy & Society.

Over the 2026-27 academic year, I will hold a Fellowship supported by Open Society Foundations to build on an existing set of research interests and outputs, which consider the moral sociology of asset-based capitalism and contemporary crises of work. This will lead to a book under contract with the Near Futures series of Zone Books.
